2nd Indo-Bhutan Friendship mela is being held in Assam

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">The second Indo-Bhutan Friendship mela  is being held at Subankhata in Baska district in Assam. Organised by  Bodoland Territorial Council, week- long mela will conclude on Tuesday. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>It is an initiative to boost -up the bilateral relation of both the countries. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Last year, the two neighbouring countries had decided to organize it on regular basis. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Government officials of both the countries took part in the opening ceremony. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Exhibition, ethnic foods and cultural shows are being organised as a  part of the friendship mela.Around 150 stalls have been set-up  representing various states.Stalls from Bhutan have also been put up at  Subankhata. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The people on either side of the Indo-Bhutan border have been on  close terms since ages and it is expected that mela would further  strengthen the ties among the citizens of the two neighbouring  countries. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>It may be recalled that people from Samdrup Jongkhar and other  areas, traded their farm products such as vegetables, dry chillies and  oranges in Assam. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Now people from India and Bhutan are expecting that with the  improved relation, border trade between both the countries would further  increased.</li>

Controversy over UID

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5731" style="display: block;">                                          <div> <ul><li style="text-align: justify;">The row between UIDAI Chairperson  Nandan Nilekani and Home Minister P Chidambaram over the Unique  Identification (UID) project has intensified. The Home Ministry has  written to the Cabinet Secretary, seeking a clear cut direction on who  will do the enrollment.  </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>In the note, the Home Secretary has stated that the UID data is not  reliable as anyone can get themselves registered under any name with any  address. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The note also says that the UID doesn't accept the MHA's data as it sees the ministry as competition. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The Home Minister has also written to the Prime Minister, saying a  final decision needs to be taken soon, as the situation is leading to  delays and embarrassment. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Earlier, Chidambaram had said that the biometric census done by the UID project did not pass security criteria. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Chidambaram had demanded that the biometric issue should be taken up immediately by the Cabinet committee on UID. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The Home Ministry claimed that UID can be generated by producing documents without any verification. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><strong>The Registrar General and Census Commissioner said that the job of collecting biometric data should be left to them.</strong> </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The Home Minister, in a letter to Deputy Chairman of Planning  Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, had made it clear that data collected  by the UIDAI did not meet the degree of assurances required under the  National Population Register from the point of view of national  security. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>He had said that the possibility of inclusion of non usual residents and creation of a false identity profile is also real. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>However, defending the procedure, UIDAI Chairperson Nandan Nilekani  had then said, "The Aadhaar cards have been given based on the UID data  taken as per the accepted procedure."</li>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="content"> <ul><li style="text-align: justify;">The Election Commission (EC) of India  has banned exit polls during the entire period when elections to the  five state assemblies would be held. In a statement in Dehradun, Chief  Electoral Officer, Uttarakhand, Radha Raturi said that in accordance  with the relevant provisions of the Representation of the People Act,  1951, the Election Commission of India has notified the period between  7am on January 28, 2012 and 5.30pm on March 3, 2012 as the period during  which conducting any exit poll or disseminating the result of any exit  poll would be prohibited.<br />

</ul><span><ul><li>While January 28 is the first day of polling in Manipur, March 3 is  the last day of polling in Goa and Uttar Pradesh. Mr.Raturi said that  under the provisions, displaying any election matter, including results  of any opinion poll or any other poll survey, in any electronic media,  would be prohibited.</li>

First resident ID cards in Andaman

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5733" style="display: block;">                                          <ul><li style="text-align: justify;">Home Minister P Chidambaram handed over  to villagers of Prothrapur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands the first lot  of resident identity cards having their details in microchips, an  initiative aimed at boosting maritime security. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The first card was given to a woman named Bhoolaxmi on Saturday.  These smart cards are part of the Centre's ambitious National Population  Register, NPR scheme. Under the scheme, residents of coastal areas in  nine maritime states and Union Territories who have attained the age of  18 years will be issued a smart card. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Speaking on the occasion, Mr Chidambaram said about 2.56 lakh cards,  each with a 64 KB microprocessor chip, will be distributed in Andaman. </li>
</ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">Besides Andaman and Nicobar Islands,  the scheme will cover Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala,  Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Puducherry, Lakshadweep  and Daman and Diu.</li>

PAC asks Air India to submit merger & fleet acquisition documents

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">Parliament's Public Accounts Committee,  PAC has asked Air India to submit all documents related to its merger  and fleet acquisition within a week. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Top officials of Air India and erstwhile Indian Airlines faced some  tough questioning by the Parliamentary panel which also slammed them  over complaints of poor passenger services. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The grilling was based on a recent CAG report on Civil Aviation  which had said that the decision to acquire 111 planes by Air India  through debt was a recipe for disaster and should have raised an alarm  in the government. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Air India officials told the PAC that it was their idea to merge the  two carriers as the open sky policy had increased competition in the  aviation sector. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>They also said that since their fleet at that time was ageing, they  had thought of acquiring new planes and believed that merger will  provide them greater strength to compete in the new environment.</li>

Arab League to decide on Syria mission's fate today

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5736" style="display: block;">                                          <ul><li style="text-align: justify;">Arab League foreign ministers are due  to meet in Egypt today to decide whether to extend their controversial  monitoring mission in Syria, amid continuing violence. The ministers  will discuss a report by the mission's head in Cairo.  </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The 165-person strong mission expired on Jan 19 with no sign of a  halt to the government's crackdown on protesters. The observers have  been criticised for failing to stop the violence, but analysts say the  league is expected to renew the mission for another month. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Meanwhile, Syrian rebels said that army deserters had briefly taken  control of much of the Damascus suburb of Douma last night after fierce  fighting with the security services.  </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting  broke out after security services shot dead four civilians at a funeral  service. The rebels later decided to withdraw for fear of reprisal  raids from the government forces. However, there has been no independent  confirmation of any fighting in the area. </li>
</ul><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">In a separate development, at least 14  people killed after a van carrying prisoners was blown up on a road in  north-west Syria. The official Sana news agency said the police van was  attacked by an armed group on the Idlib-Ariha highway.</li>

Massacre of 13 policemen boost resolve to fight against Maoists: J’khand DGP

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><ul><li style="text-align: justify;">Jharkhand DGP G S Rath has said that  Jan 21st massacre of 13 policemen by the Maoists in Garhwa has only  strengthened the resolve of policemen further to fight and finish the  left terrorism. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Mr. Rath was speaking to media at Garhwa where he said that  cooperation from Chhattisgarh is being sought to nab the perpetrators of  Saturday's killings as the area where the incident took place is near  Jharkhand - Chhatisgarh border. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>On Sunday tributes were paid at Garhwa policeline to those 13  policemen who were killed on Saturday by the Maoists through landmine  blasts and then killing the injured from point blank range. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Two injured policemen were even burnt alive. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The bodies are now being sent to the respective native places of the dead ones. </li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>The mood at the Police Head Quarter at Ranchi is that of greater  resolve to punish the guilty and there is plan for hot pursuits of the  involved Maoists, but the ordinary citizens of Jharkhand want to see  those days when there is security and peace on the grounds.</li>
