India, China begin talks on border issue

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="Normal" style="text-align: justify;"> <ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;"> India and China today began talks to  put in place a mechanism for management of the border between the two  nations, an issue that has been an irritant in bilateral relations. </span></li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon led the Indian team at  the 15th round of the Special Representatives meeting with the Chinese  delegation led by State Councillor Dai Bingguo. </span></li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">The meeting was to be held in November last year but had to be  postponed after China protested Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai  Lama's participation in the Global Buddhist Congregation in the capital  around the time of the talks </span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">India had then rejected China's demand for cancellation of the Congregation leading to the postponement of the talks. </span></li>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">Inflation in manufactured goods remains  a matter of concern despite a marginal decline in December, Finance  Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday said, expressing hope that the  overall rate of price rise would come down to 6-7 per cent by March-end. </span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">Prices of manufactured products, which account for 65 per cent of  the overall weight of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) basket, went up by  7.41 per cent year-on-year in December, as against 7.70 per cent in the  previous month. </span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">Inflation, as measured by the WPI, fell to a two-year low of <strong>7.47 per cent in December, 2011,</strong> from 9.11 per cent in the previous month. </span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">As per official data, prices of food items rose at a lower rate of  0.74 per cent in December, compared to 8.54 per cent expansion in the  previous month. </span></li>
</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">The decline in December inflation, Mr. Mukherjee said, is “mainly  due to a significant decline in inflation for primary articles,  including food inflation.” </span></li>

UAE looks to boost investments in India

</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">The Bench directed Gilani to personally appear in court to explain  why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for  deliberately disregarding the court's orders. </span></li>

130 Indians rescued in Italy cruise mishap

S. M. Krishna in Sri Lanka

Snowfall cuts Kashmir Valley off from country; north chills

Ajit Singh bats for FDI in agriculture sector

</ul><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li><span style="font-size: small;">“Farmers would be benefitted if FDI is allowed in agriculture sector  which has become non-profitable and investment is diminishing. I am  always in favour of FDI,” Mr. Singh told reporters after BSP and SP  workers from Meerut and adjoining areas joined Rastriya Lok Dal.</span><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></li>
