• The Kerala High Court on Monday ordered the opening of the Waste Treatment plant at Vilappilsala on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram city and to provide police protection for its operations.
  • In an interim order, a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon directed that all waste, except non-biodegradable ones, be allowed to be treated at the plant. The Court said, the plant should be operated as per the directive of the State Pollution Control Board.
  • Garbage removal in Thiruvananthapuram city was completely thrown out of gear for almost a month, when irate local residents prevented garbage carrying vehicles from reaching the site, in protest against waste dumping. The court directed that the plant which was locked up by the local panchayat, be opened with the help of the police.
  • The interim order was based on a petition filed by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation seeking police protection to remove the garbage.
