• The Election Commission (EC) of India, after replacing the Manipur director general of police (DGP) Y Joykumar Singh ahead of the assembly elections, is now bringing in DIG-level police officers from other states to ensure no personnel of the state police play any role in influencing voters.
  • Why was this done?
  • The EC  had removed Joykumar after political parties expressed doubts about his 'impartiality' and based on the commission's own perception and intelligence gathering on the senior policeman.
  • There were some complaints that MLAs and ministers were misusing their official vehicles and giving out work orders in violation of the model code of conduct. The EC has asked the state chief secretary to advise all MLAs and ministers to stop further violation of the code. It has decided to seize any government vehicles found being used by ministers and MLAs besides filing FIRs against the individuals.
