Cabinet approves draft National Food Security Bill

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5197" style="display: block;"> <ul style="text-align: justify;"><li> The Union Cabinet has approved draft National Food Security Bill that seeks to give legal entitlement of cheaper food-grains to 63.5 per cent of the country's population. 
 
 </li>
<li> The total financial liability to implement the law would be 3.5 lakh crore rupees, as funds will be required to raise agriculture production, create storage space and publicity among others. 
 
 </li>
<li> The Bill seeks to cover 75 per cent of the people in rural areas with at least 46 per cent under priority households. Up to 50 per cent of people will be covered in the urban centres, with at least 28 per cent under priority category. 
 
 </li>
<li> The bill also provides for 7 kg of rice, wheat and coarse grains to per person per month to priority households at 3 Rupees, 2 rupees and 1 rupee per kg. 
 
 </li>
<li> The Congress Party had promised food law in its manifesto for 2009 election and President had announced this in her address to the joint session of Parliament in June 2009.

The issue was raised in the House by Bhartru Hari Mehtab of the Biju Janta Dal who expressed anguish over the reported judgement of a Russian court. He sought the revocation of ban on the issue. Mr. Lalu Prasad of RJD also joined him raising their pitch. This led to the adjournment of the House as some more members joined the chorus.

Govt. approves 2350 crore package for handloom weavers

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5201" style="display: block;"> <ul style="text-align: justify;"><li> The Cabinet has approved a 2,350 crore rupees package for crisis-ridden handloom weavers, mostly concentrated in Uttar Pradesh. The package is part of the 6,234 crore rupees scheme for handloom weavers announced last month by Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma. 
 
 </li>
<li> The package comprised 3,880 crore for the loan waivers for three lakh individual weavers and 15,000 cooperative societies and 2,350 crore rupees for implementing a six-fold strategy, which includes providing weavers subsidised bank credit and hank yarn. 
 
 </li>
<li> The Rs 2,350 crore package includes providing interest subvention of three per cent for three years to the weavers who will also get subsidized yarn from the National Handloom Development Corporation. 
 
 </li>
<li> The subsidised credit will be made available for the SIDBI, NABARD and the nationalized banks

UN appeals for 450 million dollar aid for Yemen

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5203" style="display: block;"> <ul style="text-align: justify;"><li> The United Nations has appealed for nearly 450 million dollar in humanitarian aid for strife torn Yemen to save it from becoming what one UN official called another Somalia. 
 
 </li>
<li> This represents an increase of 95 percent compared to one year ago. At a conference in Dubai, the UN agencies and the relief groups working in Yemen said the country will need substantial humanitarian assistance over the next three to five years.  
 
 </li>
<li> These include areas like food, health care, sanitation and clean water. Almost a year long strife in Yemen has brought the nation’s economy on the verge of collapse. People are facing acute shortages of fuel, food, water and electricity.  
 
 </li>
<li> The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, estimated that at the end of November around 2.14 lakh refugees and almost half a million internally displaced persons were in Yemen. The IMF approved a 370 million dollar loan for Yemen in August 2010, but only one disbursement of around 50 million dollar has been received so far

Gujarat allots land for endangered Indian Bustard

<li> The move aims at boosting the wildlife conservation programme in the state.

<li> The land allotted is near the Kutch Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary and spread across two sq km area in Nalia taluka of Kutch.

<li> The Great Indian Bustard was up-listed to Critically Endangered, by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in June this year.  
 
 </li>
<li> A recent report by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests said, population of the GIB has been dwindling very fast and the bustards have disappeared from about 90 per cent of its range.

Dow to drop its logo from London Olympics, IOA not happy

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div id="5206" style="display: block;"> <ul style="text-align: justify;"><li> DOW Chemical has agreed to remove its logo from London's Olympic stadium but the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said that it is not satisfied with the move and wants US giant to remove its sponsorship from the 2012 Games. 
 
 </li>
<li> DOW said it was agreeing to the vision of the 2012 Games by waiving its sponsorship rights to place its brand on a controversial fabric wrap for the stadium which was objected by campaigners furious at the US conglomerate's links to the deadly Bhopal gas disaster. 
 
 </li>
<li> Dow was made a sponsor of London 2012 by Lord Coe's organising committee (Locog) in August. 
 
 </li>
<li> "The agreement between Dow and Locog was limited to branding of five 'test panels' that were to be removed in the months before the Games and were not part of the final design," Dow spokesman Scott Wheeler was quoted as saying by a British newspaper.

How Goa became a part of India

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li> In 1947 when India became independent, Portugal had control of a handful of enclaves on the subcontinent. Lisbon’s Estado da India consisted of Goa, Daman, Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. 
 
 </li>
<li> It covered an area of around 4,000 square km. The population inhabiting the area was 637,591 in 1947. Religious distribution was 61 per cent Hindu, 36.7 per cent Christian and 2.2 per cent Muslim. 
 
 </li>
<li> Resistance to Portuguese rule in Goa was pioneered by Tristão de Bragança Cunha, a French educated Goan engineer who founded the Goa Congress Committee in 1928. Da Cunha released a booklet called 'Four hundred years of Foreign Rule' and a pamphlet, 'Denationalisation of Goa'. Eventually Da Cunha would become the first president of the Goa Congress, affiliated to the Indian National Congress. 
 
 </li>
<li> On December 10, 1961, Nehru stated to the press that "Continuance of Goa under Portuguese rule is an impossibility". 
 
 </li>
<li> Operation Vijay saw the Indian Navy deploy two warships — INS Rajput, an 'R' Class destroyer, and INS Kirpan, a Blackwood class frigate, off the coast of Goa. The actual naval assault was assigned to four task groups - a surface action Group comprising five ships (Mysore, Trishul, Betwa, Beas and Cauvery), a carrier group of five ships (Delhi, Kuthar, Kirpan, Khukri and Rajput centred around carrier Vikrant), a mine Sweeping Group and a support group.

</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Mr. Havel became the icon of anti-communist dissidence and the symbol of the democratisation of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He spent over seven years in Communist prisons, which broke his health and left him with chronic bronchitis and intestinal and cardiac problems.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>Mr. Havel remained the Czech President until 2003, steering his country into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in 1999 and the European Union. He left office in 2003, a year before the Czech Republic became a member of the EU.</li>
</ul><ul style="text-align: justify;"><li>In 1968, following the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, he refused the offer of exile and spent four years in prison. That is when he wrote one of his most famous books, Letters to Olga , dedicated to his first wife.</li>
